assateague

sand takes forever
the sun, prism jellyfish
bad idea walking
miles of white beach slanted
burning, lugging wine
and camp gear
shoes off, socks on
under the poles of families
fishing or sitting
kids digging and making
castles in front of
all the monster trucks
four miles are one hundred
seagulls unburdened
fly overhead hungry
looking and diving
we'll stop and eat grapes
to redistribute weight
when we make it
to the marker
we can go behind
the dunes, set up
the tent and feast
so long as the storm
stays off, we have cards
books, bananagrams
still hoping for horses
we can be happy
with more or less
